We are very excited that in just a few days we will be launching our brand new website. Whilst we are quite attached to the current site, which has itself gone through 3 incarnations, it is simply time to move on. The new site has been in development for around 3 months, and we expect to launch within the next week.

Why?

Whilst you can modify and update a website to a certain extent, there comes a point where new technology innovations mean that a re-design is better than a re-vamp. There have been several major changes in web development and browser technology over the past two years. The key ones being;

Responsive Web Design

With almost 40% of all service related searches being made from mobile devices, it is essential to display the website to users in a format which does not require them to pinch and zoom in order to see it. A responsive site is totally different to a mobile website, as it interactively moves the contents around to fit the users screen, no matter what the size. Mobile websites were the boom 2 years ago, but now responsive is the optimal method for delivering cross platform content. This results in a tailored user experience, and means that the site will function on FUTURE tech, not just current tech.

As you can see in the image above, a responsive site delivers a totally unique experience, which is optimized for the user. The mobile or IPAD user does not have to move the page around, pinch, or zoom. The site webmaster can choose which content will display on all devices, which on mobile, and which on all.

Google have official classified responsive websites as the optimal way to deliver content, and it is considered to be an important factor in where your website will rank. See google comments here.

To quote Google; “Sites that use responsive web design, i.e. sites that serve all devices on the same set of URLs, with each URL serving the same HTML to all devices and using just CSS to change how the page is rendered on the device. This is Google’s recommended configuration”.

Schema.Org

Another important and emerging trend in web development is rich-snippets. If properly coded into a website, Rich Snippets allows Google to display information about your website IN the search results, BEFORE the user even visits your website. Look for example, at this company using Rich Snippets to display EVENT information;

Which site would you click on? Notice how ticket master (using rich snippets) have almost double the amount of space on Google search results, and thus double the chance of a user clicking. Rich snippets can be used to display lots of information types, such as reviews, locations, people information, contact details and even recipes. Rich snippets is proven to increase the CTR (number of people who click on your site) by 200% in many cases, and is an important part of modern day web development.

WC3 Standards

For those unaware, WC3 are essentially the net-police! They govern how websites are coded. “Why do we need to worry about how they are coded…” you might ask? There are over 100 web browsers available today, and unless your site meets WC3 standards, you cannot be certain that it is going to perform on all these different browsers. WC3 standards are also a ranking factor on Google, and thus present a fantastic opportunity to ensure that your website will rank well, and deliver a good browsing experience to your users.

In Summary

The above three points are the most important factors of why we decoded to re-develop, and not re-vamp our website. We are looking forward to going live with the new site, and can’t wait to hear feedback from our users.

We often use social media like Facebook, Twitter etc in our day to day life, these technologies are not just a great way to stay connected but also keeps us well informed. As we all know that your profile page is the most important component while you are on social media.

However, sometimes we tend to overlook the importance of our profile page for websites like Facebook. So what does a good or a bad profile page mean to you? Well, I think it does mean a lot if you really use Facebook, twitter on daily basis. Therefore let’s try to find out what are the advantages of a good profile page on all social media websites.

Who You Are

First Impression is the last impression. Yes! Your profile page really helps strangers to know you better. In fact I would say you can tell the people who you are, what you do etc in a manner that you would like them to know.

That’s why setting up a great profile page can create a good perception about you as a person. Moreover you are free to control or manage any information about yourself. You can share to the audiences as you would like to do.

Establishing Authority

If you are on social media for some real business then you could establish an authority through your excellent social profile. Here authority would mean a person who is a genuine expert or master in his or her field.

Generally a profile page reveals a lot about a person. Hence always create a profile to portray yourself as a punter or a guru. Even if you are not on social media for business reasons a good profile page can create an authority among your friends and colleagues.

A Consistent Signature

First let me explain what you mean by signature in regard to a profile page. Well! It would simply mean creating your own style on the Internet. Your signature could be a single line mentioning yourself or a photo/logo with your name/watermark or a small bio.

All these can be your signature but note one thing, it must be consistent across all social media websites (YouTube, Facebook etc). So create your profile page keeping your unique style in mind.

Building Network

Social media is a place where like minded people come together. Hence your profile could be a bonding factor between individuals who think similarly. So set up your profile page according to the people with whom you would like to build a social network.

For example you can build network with businessman, writers, health specialists, consultants etc. Social media is one of the best tools to build networks in a small interval of time. Moreover, people in the network can relate to you much more closely.

Free Public Relations

Public relations or PR is a method to get in contact with a lot of people around the globe very quickly. Media is the most important platform for any kind of PR exercise. However this is very costly and to run a PR campaign could cost a lot of money.

But a good profile page on social media websites can help to make you popular on the internet. All this can be absolutely free if you take care of the above mentioned points that I made. As a matter of fact today every celebrity has a profile page on Facebook or YouTube.

Conclusion

In conclusion I would suggest to you not to ignore the importance of a profile page. Hence, set up a profile page that lets you tell about yourself, tailor it to get an authority, create your own style or signature, build network or community and enjoy the PR benefits for free.

Have you ever been given pdf files but needed to use the images for creating a website? Well Adobe Photoshop can provide an ideal solution to extracting images from PDF files. Photoshop allows you to extract either the photographs from a PDF file or the pages.

Of course you can always right click and save the image but what about the pages with a background image which you can’t select. This may require you to snap shot the page and will not always give you what you want.

But by choosing to extract the pages rather then the images you can then easily use the crop tool in photoshop and have just the image required with everything else on the page cropped out… the added benefit to this is that this will be at the same size as it was in the PDF

But your asking how you go about doing this? Well it could not be simpler! All you need to do is go to open inside photoshop and select your PDF file this will then give you the choice of options between the pages and images, I always prefer to use the pages option a little more work but there are added benefits. Once you have selected your option then click on the pages or images you want but remember to hold down the ctrl key whilst selecting these with your mouse, otherwise just press control and a to select them all or if you just want the first page to open don’t select anything.

So we have selected the option we want and highlighted the images/pages we require but there a couple more features to note on this page especially if you are using this for web development. You can set the page width/height, therefore allowing you to set this to match your website. This will then allow you to crop any images without having to resize or distort the images to upload and use.

Have a look at what other options are available on the page but when your happy just click ok and your pdf will load in Photoshop for your use.

Extracting Images From PDF Files Without Photoshop

What happens if you don’t have photoshop? Well there is free programs which you can use to do the same job. The one which I would recommend would be Gimp, you can download that from the following link (http://www.gimp.org/). Gimp is free image manipulation software which will allow you to carry out tasks in roughly the same way as photoshop, the big difference is you don’t have to pay any money to use Gimp.

Gimp works similar to Photoshop in terms of how you open a pdf, you select file/open the choose your pdf, this will bring you to an import window where you can select the pages, not images which are going to be imported, you can also select whether to import these as layers or images, I find images are most useful for myself and this works the same way as pages work in Photoshop. You can set the size the same as with photoshop so that this can match your website width and therefore reduce any distortion to the images. Once done click on the import button and this will load the pdf into Gimp and your good to go just like with Photoshop.

Have a play, learn and enjoy what you do just like me

Hi I am one of the PHP developers at MakeAsAWebsite, where I have been working on a number of complex projects recently. Each project comes with its own challenges, I recently had to code a website where the client needed to be able to upload custom fonts, have access to a wide variety of font sizes and edit the font on pages easily, after much deliberation I came up with a solution for this which is cross browser compatible and WC3 friendly. The website is a WordPress content-managed site.

Firstly I needed to work out how I could upload the fonts for the site and for this I chose to use a plugin called WP Font-face. This is a fully CSS based solution which is compatible with most web browsers, and can be found here http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-font-face/.

This however aspect provided its own challenges such as how to upload the fonts, how to make the fonts accessible for the client and where the fonts are being taken from. Firstly I found through the plugin itself a website called font squirrel (url: http://www.fontsquirrel.com/) this allows for you to upload a font to their font generator and then create a font kit.

This is where I then ran into a problem with WordPress itself. I wanted to upload a folder and contents to WordPress to a specific location without using ftp, making it as easy as possible for the customer. In the end I had to decide that fileZilla was the route to go down. However this will be revisited and we will build a plugin which will avoid the use of an FTP client.

So now I had created a font kit and decided on how this would be uploaded and created a plugin for the fonts. The next challenge was how to make this easily accessible for the client. I used the advanced tinymce plugin (url: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tinymce-advanced/) which gives you more functionality as well as adding the just custom fields plugin (url: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/just-custom-fields/) . The Tinymce plugin allowed for the editor to have more options, whereas the just custom fields options allowed me to create extra text fields which still used this editor.

The Tinymce editor also had a section called styles which was vital as this is where the font face plugin style could be accessed by the client making it simple to change the text to their custom fonts. If any of you have ever used the tinymce editor you will realise this only has a limited number of font sizes, and I needed to provide the client with size options upto font size 80. Well first of all I searched around the web, then tried to tinker with the tinymce plugin, but eventually I stumbled across a brilliant article

“How to extend the usability of TinyMCE in WordPress?” This gave me a way to include all the sizes I needed quickly and easily using the functions.php file and worked a real treat, so thank you for this it was a real life saver. This article can be found here http://pablisher.nicer2.com/how-to-extend-the-usability-of-tinymce-in-wordpress/

So from all this what did I achieve? Well… I now have an easy method for the client to create custom fonts, resize their text, use the custom fonts and the font sizes all within the tinymce editor and provide a number of extra fields to separate the text for different sections for the client,

SUCCESS!!

We thought it was about time that we introduced our two newest member to the MakeUsAWebsite team. Kate Random Love joined us on a part time basis around 9 weeks ago. Kate is undertaking responsibility for the core article writing work for our clients.

The main purpose of the articles which we publish is to promote our customers websites and services. By bringing Kate into the team we are able to offer a level of publishing which is almost unprecedented in the SEO industry.

Kate’s background is in the history of art, and she received her PhD on Contemporary Art in New York in 2010. Earlier in her career worked for the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, writing departmental Press Releases and editing a weekly interdepartmental Government magazine. So far Kate has enjoyed working on client projects and researching all kinds of topics from online backups and storage, to pet products and holidays. “What I am really enjoying about working at MakeUsAWebsite is the diversity – no two days are ever the same and there is always something new to write about.”

By producing content of the highest standard we are able to ensure that they can be published on the highest quality websites. This in turn helps the customers via direct leads and the positive SEO benefits of having the articles linking back to their website.

Scott Braithwaite has also joined us in the capacity of PHP coder. His core responsibility will be coding content managed websites based on the WordPress platform. Scott is an experienced PHP developer who has been working with PHP since 2002.

Both Kate and Scott are based in our office in Cark In Cartmel, Cumbria. Whilst we are in quite rural part of the country, we are very fortunate to have found and welcomed two highly skilled professionals to the team.

Back in 2006, a micro blogging service called ‘Twitter’ was launchedin a giant pool of internet social media startups. The sole idea behind this launch was to come up with a social networking platform, where people from different terrains of the world would come together, in order to share their opinions, ideas, stories or personal experiences. However, within a fairly short period of time, Twitter successfully managed to transform itself into one of the most effective tools for communications. Whether, it is the interaction between individuals or between a business and its customers, Twitter has been proved to be much more than just a social networking fad.

Advantages of using the ‘Twitter Platform’ to build your brand

1. Visibility and exposure

The most crucial task for any business enterprise is to reach its target customers. With an enormous platform like ‘Twitter’, you can ensure that your brand gets the right kind of exposure. Tweeting is the best and the fastest way to endorse your business offerings and services. An effective approach that is being smartly framed with the right choice of words is all that you need to use your tweets as a marketing tool.

2. The smartest marketing tool ever!

The key mantra for a successful business is nothing but its list of satisfied customers. The more you impress your audience, the more they will talk about you. Twitter helps your customer circle to grow at a lightning speed. Not only this, but you can also directly interact with your customers through this platform. Responding to their queries and feedbacks is a great way to establish strong relationship with your clients and customers.

3. Keep an eye on your competition

Another huge advantage of using Twitter to promote your business is that you get to watch your competition closely and consistently. With millions of businesses sharing their trends and other information on their respective twitter pages, you can now easily follow the current market situation and act accordingly.

How to get more followers on Twitter?

Listed below are some of the most effective tips that can help you to boost your Twitter traffic.

1. Let people know about your twitter existence

Well, you just can’t expect to open an account and wait for the followers to magical swarm in. You need to make yourself visible, in order to grab the attention of the masses. It can be done in various ways. For instance, one can start by following others. According to statistics, if you follow 1000 people, then there is a strong chance that at least 100 of them will follow you back. Also, you can use other social networking platforms, in order to promote your Twitter page.

2. Tweet everyday!

Active and a consistent presence is the most effective way to get more followers on twitter. Promoting your business is definitely the main aim of tweeting, but it should not be the only aim. You must ensure that you also share certain information, pictures and links, which your followers may find interesting and entertaining.

3. Buy Twitter followers

Well, if you want instant popularity on Twitter, you can opt for alternative strategies like buying thousands of followers at one go. However, you must be very careful, with this type of method. You must do an extensive research about the sources, which are offering such services, before you spend your money.
