If you own a website, you must read this article
Google have just rolled out a new update, and it IS going to hit sites. Keep your fingers crossed it hits your site in a good way, but of course the opposite is also possible. I’ll try to detail some of the aspects which are going to be important in ensuring your site doesn’t begin to slip because of this new update;
In the official press release, Google have indicated that they are going to start ranking websites based on User feedback….. This is a potential game-changer. Google have said “In some high-confidence situations, we are beginning to incorporate data about the sites that users block into our algorithms.” I’ve been racking my brain trying to understand this one statement, but I think I have it sussed;
Recently Google started rolling out a new feature where you could block a site from your search results. So for example, if you search on “Metal Doorstops” you may be getting several sites appearing which are totally irrelevant….. Under those sites may be an option to “ignore” the site in future searches. Everyone has pretty much passed over this option until now, but the official statement today clearly indicates that if lots of people have clicked on “ignore” for your website, it will be dropping in the rankings.
My obvious concern with this is a malicious element. What for example is to stop one of your competitors from performing a search of your best ranking key phrase, and clicking “ignore” for your site? What is to stop them doing it 100 times, with different IP’s? Worrying stuff, which I’m sure Google have considered.
Google have also pointed everyone to their “Quality Guidelines”, which are located here;

The mere fact they are pointing them out does suggest that they are actually going to start using them more significantly.
I would suggest reading the document, and seeing how many of their bullet points you can actually tick. It is also important not to panic, and make mass changes. Mass changes in themselves can make it almost impossible to track what has had a positive effect and what has had a negative effect on your search engine ranking.
It’s clear that Google are moving towards more dynamic websites, which have fresh ever changing content. They are giving a penalty to static non changing sites which are badly structured. I think everyone will find out where they sit within the next few months.
I still believe that keeping fresh content on your website is the top factor at the moment. It doesn’t look like a site with fresh content will move up, quite as fast as one with static content will move down!
So whats next? With the way things are moving, it looks like Google do have concerns about the dominance of Facebook, and how Facebook are planning to integrate web-search more and more into their user experience. Google needs to get a foothold in the social side of the web, and previous attempts have not worked. Consider how many websites have FACEBOOK LIKE buttons, yet there is no Google equivalent to that button.
One thing’s for sure, everyone needs to keep one eye on Google in 2011.

Know What Your Competitors Are Doing
One of the most important things about doing business online is knowing exactly what the competition is doing, as soon as they do it. This includes knowing about new products they are launching, and new services they are offering.
There are several methods you can use to aid you in this task, but the one I want to tell you about is provided by…. Yes, you guessed, Google.
If you haven’t heard of ‘Google Alerts’ get familiar with it as soon as you can.
There are several ways you can leverage the power of Google alerts.
Firstly, go to www.google.com/alerts
If you don’t already have a Google account, you will need to get one by signing up here https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount
What Google Alerts does is to allow you to see new data which Google indexes, instantly. First of all, head over to the Google alerts site;

The first thing is search term, this is where you will tell Google what you want to monitor. Using it in its most basic form isn’t very effective, so what you can do is use some clever bits of code to really drill into the Google database, and find the data which will help you.
Find Competitor Backlinks
Let’s say for example, you want to be notified every time one of your competitors creates a backlink. All you need to do is put “site:www.website.com” without the quotes. Leave type set to EVERYTHING, and set the frequency to whichever you desire. Using the FEED option you can actually see the results the instant they arrive.
Are you being talked about
Perhaps you want to be notified when someone talks about you? Just put your company name into the Search Terms. If your name has any spaces in it, ensure you surround everything with quotes; otherwise you may end up with unwanted results. Now you can see every time someone mentions you, and act upon that information.
Where should you get links from?
If you have a website, you need links for two reasons;
1. It improves you standing with Google
2. It provides potential customers another way of finding you
Getting what are known as backlinks can be tricky, and there are many ways of doing this. It should certainly be part of your SEO strategy. But where would those links be best place? Google has the answer. Just put the following into the Search Terms field; “related:www.yourwebsite.com” without quotes. Google will flag up any pages IT considers to be similar to yours. Get links to your site from those pages, and Google will love your site.
Check For Copyright Theft
Google alerts can provide a free method of finding stolen material from your website, quickly! Pick some text from your homepage (a 5 or 6 word sentence) and paste it into rhe Search Terms, in quotes. If anyone creates a duplicate, you will get an alert.
In terms of how often you get the reports, you have several options. My personal favourite is to select FEED and just leave a browser window open reading the feed. You will then instantly know when an alert pops up. It’s even worth investing in another monitor purely to have your finger right on the pulse!
